Altrincham is around the corner

Somehow I ended up in the outskirts of Manchester, since I heard that shop had some rare Joy Division sitting on the wall. When I arrived there they just sold that LP was after in the morning.

But after a small chat with the owner, he went looking in the pile of new records that came in and he pulled out this copy of Sheila Take A Bow signed by Johnny Marr.

Also I found a copy of Ask that I was missing.

Stretford blues

I was in Manchester last week for the Roller Derby World Cup. Luckily I had time enough to travel through the whole of the Greater Manchester area and visit a ton of sites of musical importance and obviously a gazillion record stores.

My main focus was the Smiths but I ended up buying a ton of different stuff. But let’s start with the Smiths singles. I passed way to much overpriced stuff but I did found a few good buys. First thing I found was this How Soon Is Now single, the sleeve had seen better days but the price was low. Turned out after closely examining that it was the Australian pressing and not the regular UK pressing.

At another shop, I dug up this German pressing of Stop Me on yellow vinyl.

Finally at another shop, from the sales bin, I dug up two interview singles. Buy 1 get 1 for free, are my favorite deals.

Added a few tapes, two of them are actually signed by the artist in question.

The first test press of the year of course is a Smiths one. This is the promo version of their live record Rank. Just a white label and regular sleeve.

Also I found a nice copy of the Shandie Shaw single to add to my collection. This 12″ is the German pressing, almost identical to the UK pressing, but a bit more tricky to find. Again the whole backup band on this single is the Smiths, all the additional vocal parts are done by Morrissey.

William, I started something…Panic and bring me my Ouija board

A few Smiths and Morrissey singles arrived just before the weekend. Let’s start with two regular singles a UK and German pressing.

Also I added this weird split promo 7″ made for the Canadian market.

The last one is this German pressing of Ouija board, Ouija board by Morrissey

It’s the end of the year. There’s another one coming.

It’s the end of the year, There’s another one coming.

To wrap up last year, I wanted to share my favorites of the year, I picked up a ton of records, I was very lucky with both punk, hardcore, Springsteen, Smiths and Morrissey records. Did found some great Country, New Wave and (Hard) Rock records too.

My favorite obviously is the Minor Threat  – Out Of Step test press, I picked up in Sweden.

I found twenty test presses this year, mostly related to The Smiths, these are the best imho: Fugazi – Red Medicine LP, Fugazi – 3 Songs 7″ & these two The Smiths LPs.

When it comes to punk and hardcore, I added a few nice ones, second press Agnostic Front – Victim In Pain LP, Blue Husker Du LP, State Of Alert 7″ and this more recent Mouthpiece LP.

When it comes to old Dutch punk, I found a few nice additions to the collection.

Also I managed to cross off two of my main wants when it comes to Dangerhouserecords. Just need that Rhino 39 7″ to complete the set.

All in all a good year record wise. When it comes to “new” stuff, this is what I have been playing the most, both on physical and digital format in random order:

  • Fireburn – Don’t Stop The Youth EP
  • Iron Chic – You Can’t Stay Here LP
  • Burn – Do Or Die LP
  • Quicksand – Interiors LP
  • Molly – Stay Above LP
  • Damnation A.D. – Pornography LP
  • Shipwrecked – s/t 7″
  • Rixe – Bapteme Du Feu 7″
  • Vanishing Life – Surveillance LP
  • Ecostrike – Time Is Now 7″
  • Run The Jewels – III LP
  • Cutting Through – A Will To Change EP
  • Pale Waves – Television Romance 7”
  • The Smiths – The Queen Is Dead boxset
  • Jawbreaker – First Demo digital
  • Don’t Sleep – s/t 12”
  • Limp Wrist – Facades LP
  • Absolution – Juxtaposition 7″

When it comes to show, I hit an all time low, I only managed to catch 18 shows, but I did see a few memorable ones: Guns N Roses, Iron Chic, Quicksand and Undeclinable Ambuscade.

Going out with a bang

For the last record of the year, I might as well end with a rare one. Finding later Morrissey on vinyl can be a daunting task. Back in 2004 I was so hooked on this record. I got a copy on cd to play in the car while I was in the USA for the summer. When I came back to Europe, I didn’t put much effort in getting a vinyl copy, which I instantly regretted a good year later. But finally after 13 years, I found a copy. This is definitely one of the best Morrissey records he has ever made. I would rate it his best, par with Viva Hate.

Jacky is only happy…

If Morrissey has a new single, I have to get a copy. This one is actually better than the previous one. Nice Elvis cover on the b-side.

Spanish Sun

The last bootleg is this later show recorded in Madrid, I think this was their last stint of shows on the European mainland. Good quality, probably recorded from the radio. Again this one is somewhat of an older bootleg, probably made in the early 90’s.

Miserable lies

Like I said, I got a few bootlegs last week. This one is so cool due to featuring the only concert The Smiths ever gave in the Netherlands. Based on the details that I have, this is a somewhat older bootleg, probably 90’s, sound quality is good. Love the band picture on the back, it could be a Cro-Mags band picture from the 80’s too if you look at Johnny Marr. I want that t-shirt Morrissey is wearing on the front of the sleeve.
